Kajtaz House
Mostar, Herzegovina
This early 18th century Moslem residence is located east of the Neretva River. This view shows the haremluk (family quarters) with open living porches on two levels. These shaded spaces allow ample ventilation for the hot summers of Herzegovina. The diagonal wooden braces supporting extended, slate-clad roof eaves are typical of the region. The courtyard contains an entrance to an orchard beyond; from the raised stone floor, one can enter the kitchen that is built against the sloped grade. The courtyard walls provide privacy from the neighbors on the lower stepped slope of the land.
